I just wanted to start off by saying this place is amazing. This is the first time my wife and I have been to this area and I promise we will be back and we will stay at this cabin. It is truly amazing!!!! Not to mention pet friendly. Our dogs are our babies!! We had a blast and so id our babies. The cabin was very, very clean and was very homey. Thanks for letting us stay in your very beautiful cabin and we will be back.

John. Thanks for sharing your cabin with us one again.
There's the Sky lift, Natural Bridge, 2 others & trails. But this trip we just relaxed on the front porch with the only sounds being the birds and the wind in the trees. The owls serenading us at night was an extra bonus!
Such a spotless comfy atmosphere makes for an especially pleasurable visit.
We'll be back again in the fall.

Thanks for such a wonderful, quite relaxed weekend! Our first time here and Maggie was right - awesome. Our favorite was the fire pit - I will be telling everyone about it.
Also the little "rock house" restaurant just south on 11 is great - all fresh and organic, locally grown food.
Thanks

I have to quote guest William B Thomas when he summed up my feelings about Big Rock Cabin back November 2012: "This is a good cabin I wish I could live here but I can't. I got to go home"
Having all 3 dogs with us was a bit of an experience, but happy to report everything worked out well! Weather these 4 days couldn't have been any more perfect. Since all 3 dogs are "super seniors" as the vet says, we chose less challenging trails to do w/them in the AM. Ben and I took off in the afternoons while the old dogs took their much needed 5 hour nap. With dogs Rush Ridge and Pinch'em Tight. Sans dogs Rough trail from Gray's arch to Pinch'em Tight and back, Hood's Branch, Rock Garden, and Low Gap.
There is the sweetest little swallow who has built a beautiful nest on the front porch. I do hope she will not be disturbed in the future. And just like last year - the hummingbirds returned and have started staking out their territory and hogging their feeders.
Nice bathroom renovation! And the bedroom furniture has been rearranged since last year. Everything else is wonderfully the same!
Happy Trails

We had a great stay at your beautiful cabin. So peaceful and relazing. Very clean and was more than imagined. You were right about bringing a flashlight as is was pitch black at night. We definitely plan to be back maybe with the kids next time! They would absolutely love it. Thanks again. We had a great time.

I'm not sure how I managed to find your cabin on-line but am so glad I did! Your cabin is great - clean - well stocked kitchen and felt like home without the responsibility. We are here celebrating Christy's graduation from OSU and Mitchell's first year at IU. It has been so fun hiking, playing games, and just relaxing with the kids (ok young adults). Our second day of hiking was quite the adventure - somehow we ended up at the opposite side of the gorge from where we started and where our car was. We were rain soaked and it was too late to head back into the woods so......we hitch hiked! A first!! Fortunately a couple from Stanton picked us up and took us to our car. What a blessing! Word of advise - take a compass and watch the trail signs carefully.
We would love to make this an annual trip. It was so fun and the cabin is amazing.

What a wonderful time we had. My sister came in from Florida, we spent the rainy day at Natural Bridge. The cabin was great and we both think it is a lot more than we expected. Very clean and we will be back.
5/15/13
Just like everyone before me has said, this place is wonderful!! Thanks so much for allowing us to re-charge in your lovely home. I most enjoyed the fire pit & gorilla rock; seems almost magical to sit back there and lounge around a fire. It's probably one of the coolest fire pits I've ever had the privilege to enjoy! Just a note: Chimney Rock is much quicker to get to from the left turn outside your road. We got lost & ended up going all the way around scenic drive! So, left out of this road (Glencairn) till it dead ends, then a left (old white store) then (a left on 15), a right after the children's home. That takes you all the way to park signs! Thanks again John - We'll definitely plan to come back!

This is a great home away from home. Awesome set up! Thank you Mom and Charlie for a great weekend! We had a great time, good food and a great hike around Rock bridge. Glad we made it. Also had a blast with all my sisters, laughing around the camp fire and eating birthday cake & ice cream @ the camp fire. Katie needs some cake cutting practice as she started cutting in the middle of the cake because she didn't want an end piece. Once again thanks Charlie and mom for a Great Weekend. Enjoy you week here.

We got here 5/17/13. One of our daughters stayed the weekend. We had a blast. It was the first vacation I had with my new daughters Becky/Katie/Jamie even if Jamie left her car keys in Becky's car which Becky found after she got home. This cabin is better than what the web site says. We celebrated our first anniversary here and it was better than the cabin we had for our honeymoon.

We really enjoyed the week here. This is the best cabin we have ever stayed, we are now spoiled! Truly a home away from home. We went hiking on a couple of trails, went to Campton & Beatyville to look up family history. My husband and I really enjoyed the peace and quite, watching the hummingbirds, butterflies, the two lizards - one reddish, the other one with a blue green tail go up and down the chimney and lay in the sun on the deck. Listening to the whippoorwills sing at night.

We came from Michigan with our teenagers to see the Red River Gorge. We found Big Rock Log Cabin by searching on the internet. As with anything online, we were skeptical. But John's pictures and videos gave us assurance. We certainly weren't disappointed. WOW! This cabin is great.
We're hiking tomorrow, rock climbing on Friday with a guide from Red River Outdoors and horseback riding with Cable's Stables.
Thank you for sharing your home with us.

PS: the rock garden trail to the natural bridge was beautiful! Start on the original trail and follow it until you see a sign on the right for battleship rock/rock garden trail. We cooled off at the end of the day in the mini-rapids at Mill Creek Lake (just about a mile down hwy 11 from the cabin). Cable's Riding Stabele (606-362-4456) nice, leisurely trail ride and owners very nice. Note: gps takes you too far past the stables, where your car can get stuck. Look for the "stop here and ride" sign once you are on Little Bend Ridge Rd.
The Whittleton Branch trail to the arch trail was great. It follows a creek to the arch. Go to the Whittleton campground just down hwy 11 and park by the wood shed. The trail was muddy but it was raining when we hiked. The kids had fun climbing on the rocks at the arch. 2 miles round trip, pretty flat. You can walk in the creek for part of the way.
We went rock climbing with Dan Beck from Red River Outdoors near Torrent Falls. Dan gave us a very un, challenging and safe day. email is [email protected] 937-545-7278

Well John, another great visit. Unlike last 2 years, lots of rain. Also cool, not like furnace weather of last year. Great for us since we enjoy so much sitting on the porch, reading and enjoying the quiet. Next to the art, that has always been our favorite thins about this place. Then there's the hummingbirds, incredible rock house, home feel of the cabin. Hope you're Colorado visit is good and look forward to maybe seeing you next trip.

We are first time renters. We were so pleasantly surprised about how well and enjoyable our stay here at Big Rock was. The cabin was way beyond our expectations and con't wait to tell all our friends and family about it. My husband and I don't do much traveling because we don't like to leave behind our dog. This was a perfect vacation for us because we were able to be together with Jax our dog. Thank you for providing us with this opportunity; a clean, accommodating, and relaxing environment. We hope to come back for another visit and maybe with friends.

Had a great second trip to Big Rock. Brought the kids this time. Tray (17), Brooke (15), and Hope (12) really liked the fire pit and their loft bedroom.
We loved the comforts of home, soft couches, blankets, and plenty of great spices. This is a nice touch compared to other cabins.
Thanks for a great stay! PS we think the gorilla rock looks kind of like

This is the third time we've been to Big Rock - we found plenty of things to do - rode the skylift, went to Daniel Boone National Forrest, hiked a little, saw the museum in Clay City, ate at the State Park Lodge. The nature enter at Gladie is very informative.
I think we'll be back!

This was our first stay at Big Rock and it was far beyond our expectations! Everyday we kept saying to ourselves "This place just keeps getting better!" We have three children and they absolutely loved the bedroom "loft". The fire pit is something out of a movie - so cool day and night. We found time to drive through Red River Gorge, Ride the Skylift, go fishing, and we even swam at the pool (which the kids loved)
All in all, one of the most memorable family vacations we've had!

This was our 1st time @ Big Rock. We loved it! What a beautiful cabin! We loved how fully equipped it was.
We did a lot of hiking while we were here which is something our family really enjoys.
It rained last night but we were still able to sit out @ the fire.
We are hoping to come back again sometime.

Loved the Cabin! Enjoyed the decorations. We enjoyed the fire pit however could not get family to join in campfire songs. Now who's the Debbie Downer Lacey?? Loved hiking with the family, Lacey is a natural born hiker. She could have hiked 100 miles. Will definitely come back. Miguels pizza was very good.
Thanks So Much P.S. My daughter wants to buy your moose cups.

Thanks for letting us stay at your cabin. It is so beautiful here. We love it. It was a great place to relax, read, do puzzles, play games, and watch movies. We want to thank housekeeping for the tip to eat at the Hitchin Post. We loved it! Also thanks to housekeeping for doing such a great job, this is the cleanest cabin we have ever stayed at! Here's some tips for others who stay here.
Hike the Creation Falls (Rock Bridge Trail), fun but tiring, falls pretty through. Cave tour @ natural bridge, really cool and good place to get out of the heat. Natural Bridge trail, beautiful but scary. Sky Bridge trail, great views but even scarier than natural bridge. Angel Windows hike, short and easy but trail was eroded. "Traditional" square dancing, just line dancing and they didn't teach you
We will be back again. We love it here and want to come again next year.

We came to celebrate our 1st anniversary (and enjoy a babymoon). The cabin exceeded our expectations. Thanks for providing a safe, clean and updated home away from home. We plan to return to Big Rock to continue our explorations. As everyone notes, the stay is always too short. While here we enjoyed the trails at Natural Bridge, Miguel's Pizza, fudge from Ye Ole Country Peddler and hummingbird activity on the porch. We recommend breakfast on the porch..so much to do and see. Despite my husband's advers on doing campfires, we enjoyed smores at the fire pit. We are leaving relaxed and happy. On our way out we will try breakfast at the Rock House. The menu looks delicious.
Thanks Again.

Cabin was great. We walked every trail in Natural Bridge park. We walked several rough and other trails in Daniel Boone National Forest. We did the zip line at Red River Gorge Zip line tours, which was the best around. We saw the Reptile Zoo, awsome and fun. (Daniel Boone Forest most natural forest I have ever seen). We went kayaking at Red River Adventures in Daniel Boone Forest. We ate at Miguels Pizza, the cafe and ate fudge from the fudge shop. Great spanning views at all sites. No GPS works all things were on roads 11, 715, and 15, just go find them.
Thanks for the great time.

So pleased when we drove up to the cabin - even better in person and we spent the next few hours unpacking and exploring. I was immediatly drawn to the squekie Jones 'Cotton Picken' painting. Love it! as we did all the folk art throughout the cabin.
The first day we really just spent getting our bearings together, cooked dinner, watched movies, took Max (black lab) swimming in Mill Creek and the stars!!! Visitors must look up in the sky. I never se stars like this anymore, just beautiful.
Day 2 we took a driving tour with several short hikes. We drove to Rogers, KY and followd rte 715 thru Daniel Boone NF. The views at Devil's is beautiful! Picknic lunch at Sky Bridge. Stopped at Gladie Learning Center, very well done. Short hike to suspension bridge. Ralph and Max loved this. I did too but found it horrifying. Rt 77 to Nada Tunnel, rt 15 Tunnel Ridge Rd. Auxier Ridge Trail. Back to Big Rock.
We had hoped to have dinner at Rock House restaurant but closed on Wed so went to Natural Bridge Hotel Lodge, it was OK but we love Ky State Parks so it was fun for us.
We finished the day with beautiful fire in the fire pit, this is as fabulous space!! And of course a little star gazing.
Today we head home. Coffee with the hummingbirds and we will stop and have lunch at Miguels on the way home.
Thank you for a beautiful few days of rest, art, relax, and hiking.

I love your house and your rocks behind the house. I like the jacuzzi and the pig chair. Your fossils and paintings are nice. I also like the weird sculptures. There are lots of cool things. The thing I dont like is the devils in the bathroom. The paintings are awesome. We also like to climb the rock left to the picnic table. This place was a lot of fun and we would like to come here again

This place is just great! Four of my six daughter and two of the grand kids are here. Tere is something for everyone. For myself I love the quiet and tranquility. I've traveled quite a bit since my husband died and this is by far the most relaxing trip I've made.
I'm 85 yrs old now and can't do a lot of hiking but the kids make up for it!
Love the cabin and all the decor.

What a great cabin in the woods! Super clean and everything you could possibly want or need rain or shine right at hand - books, puzzles and games. More importantly a big covered porch for just sitting and watching the birds or night time star gazing. Meals are easy on the gas grill or go to the lodge just up the road. The sky lift is always fun and plenty of brails to walk.
Its been another fun "get away" to the "Big Rock" and we will be back in the spring.

This was our first visit to the area. We had as much fun exploring Big Rock's decorating items and art work as the area. Sitting around the fire pit was exactly what our family needed. The weekend could not have been more perfect.

This cabin was lots of funn. Got to play inside and got to eat smors by the camp fire. The thing I did not like and I've been here 3 times -- I don't like the devils (a folk art sculpture).
We loved being able to stay at the cabin for the 3rd time! The cabin, scenery, and the art work was gorgeous! Especially the devil art work in the bathroom. Every time we're here we find some way to enjoy ourselves. We will be back!

Operation Deep Freeze
We've been coming to this area (RRG) since the 1960's when it was called Cumberland National Forest and Mr. Crail was th ehead ranger in winchester. The AM temps the 3 days here were 21, 19, and the warm morning 22 F. On the hot day, the afternoon temp soared to 29. We love it here when the leaves are down because you can see so much more! Also there are no bugs, snakes, wasps, scorpions, ect.
Anyway, the purpose of this trip was to find proof of the "Wolfe county Wolfman", so we made a couple of trips over to "Hazel Green" where we turned our 38 Lb mixed breed dog "Frank" loose to do some tracking. Frank was not successful and although we met a bunch of interesting people over there, not of them were the wolfman. We did see where the TV crew did some shooting.
Next we went to the IGA in Beattyville to get a case of "Ale8" in returnable bottles. That stuff is great! Next we went to "Zoe" on KY 11 where there is an exposed "coal seam" and we picked up a box full of Coal to use at the fire pit. We love the smell of burning coal!
Our two grandsons Henry and Andy both loved the coal fire but got soot on their clothes. Fun! Fun!
We also went over to the extreme south end of Magoffin Co. to find the actual headwater of the Licking River south of "Gunlock". Then we checked out the abandoned railroad grade at "Royalton" that is now a horse trail... really neat!
We did a whole bunch of other stuff too. We Really Like This Cabin!
Dave & Mary Pat
It doesn't take much to please some people.

We had Such Fun!! Our grandson's (twins and 20 months old) first vacation. They say "Wow, Cool, Wow" about this neat cabin. They loved the steps and walking up to the fire pit. Thanks for sharing. PS Frank the dog loved it too.

Thank you for giving us such a wonderful place to stay for the weekend. This has truly been an amazing stress free place! This was the perfect get away! My husband and I live in central Georgia and his awesome kids live in Michigan, so this place served as our "meet in the middle". John went above and beyond by shoveling the road and packing our supplies in after the snow and Ice on his UTV. Thank you so much! We got more than we anticipated at Big Rock and we all want to come back again and again! We got lucky with the snowfall and found a great place ot go sledding! Definitely go see the Natural Bridge if you are here, it was so breath taking! (Literally and figuratively). This place is beautiful and so full of great energy. Thank you, Thank you!
Blessings!

Had a wonderful stay at Big Rock, one of the best cabins we've ever stayed in! Jacuzzi was a delight and we all felt right at home. Enjoyed our time hiking at Natural Bridge and Red River Gorge along with a pleasant hose ride at Cabels Stables. It was a nice getaway!
Thanks So Much

Thank You So Much!!!

The artwork is amazing in the cabin and the scenery is breath taking. Never thought you could actually "hear" quiet...but you certainly can here!! We will definitely be back again soon! Thanks Again!

This was our first visit to the area. We had as much fun exploring Big Rock's decorating items and art work as the area. Sitting around the fire pit was exactly what our family needed. The weekend could not have been more perfect.
Thank you for opening your well stocked, beautifully furnished cabin to us.

We had a lot of fun hiking to the Natural Bridge and sledding down some hills. We will be back to this wonderful place! Thank you for shoveling the drive down here, so we could drive down.

Blessings!
